Sensory Integration

Helping your child cope with sound, touch, light and movement.

What is it?

Many autistic children experience senses differently. Some are over-sensitive (noise hurts, clothes feel scratchy) and some are under-sensitive (they seek spinning, crashing or chewing). Sensory-based therapy, usually led by an occupational therapist, helps children manage these feelings and stay calm and ready to learn.

How it helps

  • Fewer meltdowns caused by sensory overload
  • Better tolerance of haircuts, nail cutting, new clothes and foods
  • Improved focus and sitting for activities
  • Safer ways to get the movement or pressure a child seeks
  • Better sleep and calmer transitions

What a session looks like

The therapist may use swings, trampolines, therapy balls, textured materials and weighted items. Together you build a “sensory diet” — a daily plan of activities that give your child the input they need.

Video lessons

Follow along with our step-by-step videos. New lessons are added regularly.

Try this at home

  • Heavy work: carrying grocery bags, pushing a laundry basket, wall push-ups
  • Deep pressure: firm hugs (if your child likes them), rolling in a blanket “burrito”
  • Noise-reducing headphones for busy places
  • A calm corner with dim light, cushions and soft textures
  • Messy play with rice, sand or water to slowly explore textures

Tip: Watch your child closely and let them lead. Never force a sensory experience — it should feel safe and enjoyable.

Finding the right therapist

  • Look for a qualified, licensed professional with experience with autistic children
  • Ask how they will involve you and what goals they will set
  • Choose someone your child is happy and comfortable with
  • Expect regular progress updates you can understand
