Home Activities & Daily Routines

Simple, everyday activities parents can do at home.

What is it?

Therapy works best when it continues at home. Parents spend far more time with their child than any therapist — and everyday moments like meals, bath time and car rides are perfect chances to learn.

How it helps

  • Turning everyday routines into learning opportunities
  • More predictable days and fewer meltdowns
  • Better sleep, eating and toileting routines
  • Practising therapy goals between sessions
  • Stronger bonding between parents and child

What a session looks like

Ask your child’s therapists for two or three goals to practise at home. Choose a few small daily moments — like snack time — and practise for just 5–10 minutes. Little and often is better than long sessions.

Quick tips (Shorts)

Teaching handwashing in small steps

Try this at home

  • Visual daily schedule on the fridge with pictures for each part of the day
  • Bedtime routine: same order every night — bath, pyjamas, story, lights out
  • Kitchen helper: washing vegetables, stirring, pouring
  • Timers to show when an activity is ending
  • Picky eating: offer one new food beside favourite foods, without pressure

Tip: Keep it fun and low-pressure. Your child’s comfort and your relationship come first.

Finding the right therapist

  • Look for a qualified, licensed professional with experience with autistic children
  • Ask how they will involve you and what goals they will set
  • Choose someone your child is happy and comfortable with
  • Expect regular progress updates you can understand
